Ping Rating Guide
| Ping | Rating | Best for | Typical source |
|---|---|---|---|
| <10ms | Excellent | Competitive FPS, trading | Fiber ethernet |
| 10–30ms | Great | All gaming, HD video calls | Fiber / cable ethernet |
| 30–60ms | Good | Casual gaming, calls | Cable, fiber Wi-Fi |
| 60–100ms | Fair | Casual gaming (delay noticeable) | DSL, distant server, Wi-Fi |
| 100–200ms | Poor | Streaming only | DSL, poor Wi-Fi |
| >200ms | Bad | Basic browsing only | Satellite (HughesNet/Viasat) |
Jitter Reference
| Jitter | Rating | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| <5ms | Excellent | Completely stable — no noticeable issues |
| 5–15ms | Good | Stable for gaming and calls |
| 15–30ms | Fair | Occasional hiccups in video calls |
| >30ms | Poor | Choppy calls, inconsistent gaming |
How to Reduce Your Ping
Use ethernet instead of Wi-Fi — this alone reduces ping by 5–20ms and eliminates wireless jitter. Choose fiber or cable over DSL or satellite. Close background applications. Connect to game servers in your geographic region. If on Wi-Fi, switch to 5 GHz band for lower latency.
How This Ping Test Works — and Why It’s More Useful
The classic ping command uses ICMP packets, which many routers, firewalls, and ISPs deliberately block or deprioritize. That means the system ping command often shows lower latency than your actual application-layer experience — the layer that games, video calls, and web pages actually use. This tool measures HTTP-layer latency, which is what your applications actually see.
How the 20 probes work
20 sequential XHR GET requests are sent to speed.cloudflare.com/__down?bytes=0 — a zero-byte endpoint that returns immediately with no content. The round-trip time is measured with window.performance.now(), a high-resolution timer accurate to fractions of a millisecond. A 150ms delay between probes prevents queuing effects from inflating results.
What jitter actually means
Jitter is the variation in ping between consecutive requests. A connection with 20ms average ping but 15ms jitter will feel inconsistent — your game data arrives unpredictably. A connection with 25ms average ping and 2ms jitter will feel smooth. Low jitter matters more than low average ping for gaming and video calls.
| Tool | Protocol | Sample Count | Jitter | Blocked by firewalls? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This test | HTTP/XHR to Cloudflare | 20 probes | ✓ Yes | ✖ No |
Windows ping command |
ICMP | 4 by default | ✖ No | ✓ Often blocked |
| Most online ping tools | Websocket or iframe | 5–10 | Sometimes | ✖ No |
| PingPlotter | ICMP + TCP | Continuous | ✓ Yes | Partial |
Why Cloudflare? Cloudflare operates 300+ points of presence worldwide, so you’re almost always testing to an edge server within 10–30 miles of your location. This means the ping result reflects your ISP’s local network quality — not the distance to some distant test server. Testing to a closer server gives a cleaner picture of your connection’s true latency.
Does this replace in-game ping? No — your in-game ping to a specific game server will be somewhat higher than results here, because game servers are farther away than Cloudflare’s edge. Think of this test as your connection’s baseline capability. If this shows 40ms, your in-game ping to a nearby server will be 40–70ms.
Ping Test Questions
How this works: Sends 20 sequential HTTP GET requests to speed.cloudflare.com and measures round-trip time using the browser’s Performance API (window.performance.now). Requests use no-cache headers. Min, avg, max, and jitter are calculated from all 20 samples.
